Detective Senior Sergeant Sally Patrick, of Hastings, is the Police Association’s new Region 4 (Eastern and Central) director.

When did you join Police and why?

I joined in 2004 – Wing 218. I had wanted to be a police officer since I was a teenager. It looked exciting, every day would be different and I got to drive fast and lock up the bad guys.

What are the key attributes to being successful in a Police career?

Patience, having a great team and having your colleague’s back. Not giving up and having a laugh after a rough day because there can be quite a few of those.

How has policing changed since you began your career?

When I started we didn’t have vests, Tasers or guns in the car. It has definitely become harder and riskier but the people you work with are what makes it a great career.

What is the best thing about your role/s in Police?

Locking up murderers and sexual offenders; getting a result for the victim and their families.

If you weren’t a police officer, what would you be doing?

I would own my own furniture upholstery business specialising in restoration.

How do you want to represent members in the Region 4 director’s role?

I want to keep them connected, make sure they get the support they need when they need it and ask the questions that no-one else will.

Are you a true “Magpie” or were you raised somewhere other than Hawke’s Bay?

Absolutely, born and bred in Hawke’s Bay, grew up on a farm (that probably answers a lot).

Tell us about your family and life outside work?

I am married to KJ Stewart, senior sergeant in Eastern District Command Centre. We have a 10-year-old daughter, Taylor Rose, and I’m stepmum to daughter Teresa (33) and son Josh (29). I like to travel with my family, I like my garden and I enjoy the best red wine from our awesome Hawke’s Bay wineries.

What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?

I was a competitive kick boxer.

What’s the most adventurous thing you have ever done?

Jumping out of the rescue helicopter into the sea to rescue someone.
