This is a selection of some of the Police building issues members have described:

Auckland court cells: Cell doors unfit, cells overcrowded, safety issues around access to CCTV, lack of ventilation, officers unwell, asbestos

Auckland Hub and Federal St: Floods, lifts broken, mouldy stairwell, only one vehicle entrance/exit

Avondale: Air-conditioning, substandard replacement balcony, ceiling falling apart, leaks, urgent remediation needed for Building Warrant of Fitness (BWOF)

Blenheim: Working out of other buildings, told rebuild “put on hold indefinitely”. Police documents say “will require a Treasury funding bid”

Cromwell: Leaks

Feilding: Urgent remediation for BWOF

Glen Innes: Rat and bird infestation, CCTV black spots, staff threatened and accosted

Greymouth: Black mould, staff “decanted”, thermal fogging and testing; as at 7/11/24 repairs, deep cleaning and plant hire cost Police $233,000, does not include rents/leases and portacom costs

Hastings custody unit: Covered with weatherproofing for three years, sewer pipes being repaired

Henderson: Roof leaks, pipes regularly block, flooding, shower/ablution blocks black mould, “safe” interview rooms are not soundproof

Karamea: Friable asbestos suspected

Lower Hutt: Still leaking

Manukau Multi Agency Centre: Leaks since 2019, ceiling panels and window sills mushy, black mould, building at 20% New Building Standard (NBS) so earthquake-prone (EPB), will need seismic strengthening within 35 years

Mt Roskill: Leaks, car park risks flooding (again) in heavy rain

Murupara: Urgent remediation for BWOF

National Park: Friable asbestos suspected

Nelson custody and station: Custody still leaks, black mould, still fogging, fears new roof will “seal in the problem,” major leaks and black mould in station

New Plymouth: Urgent remediation for BWOF

Northland: Long-term leaks, air-conditioning

Ōtāhuhu: Staff out of station since fire in 2024

Paeroa: Outgrown station

Palmerston North: Recently refurbished but leaks, lift breaks down constantly, air-conditioning

Papakura: Leaks, air-conditioning, vehicle gate breaks continually

Police College: 15% seismic rating, must be rectified within 7 1/2 years, generally “decrepit”

Rotorua: Air-conditioning issues, cannot open windows, no air-conditioning in custody cells “creates nightmares”

Stratford: Leaky roof, building consent issues uncovered

Tauranga: Urgent remediation for BWOF

Te Awamutu: Generator works needed after “notice to fix” from council

Upper Hutt: Friable asbestos confirmed, not controlled nor restricted

Waipukurau: Black mould, leaks, internal gutters corroded, construction defects and moisture penetration do not comply with NZ Building Code, decayed timber framing, cladding and windows, concrete walls cracking

Wellington Central: Whole fitout (restack) needed, “passive fire issues,” services need to be replaced and/or upgraded

Whakatāne: Outgrown station, passive fire issues

Whanganui: Asbestos warnings, holes, leaks, “antiquated” cells
