Geoff Smith - 2006

Geoff joined the Police in 1969. He was stationed at Timaru, Wellington, Upper Hutt and returned to Timaru before taking up his sole charge position in Pleasant Point in 1985.

During his policing career he worked as a dog handler, served as a member of the AOS and was deployed as a District Diplomatic Protection Squad Officer. Geoff was one of five police officers selected to carry out security for Team New Zealand in San Diego in 1995 and was New Zealand’s first guardian of the America’s Cup.

Geoff was elected to the Police Association Wellington Committee from 1973 to 1976; and to the South Canterbury Committee in 1977.  Geoff held the position of Secretary until 1989.  He was elected Conference Delegate from 1989 until 1993. Also in 1989, he was elected Region Five Director and became a member of the Police Association Board.

Geoff was elected a Vice-President in 2000, until he retired from the Board in 2005.

Geoff sat on the Boards of the Police and Families Credit Union, Police Welfare Fund and Police Welfare Fund Insurances.

Geoff was a strong advocate for the Police Welfare Fund Holiday Homes and chaired the Holiday Homes Sub-Committee during his directorship.

Geoff was awarded Life Membership in 2006.
