Domestic Violence (Enhancing Safety) Bill - Submission

NZPA | Fri February 27th, 2009

The Police Association welcomes the introduction of the Domestic Violence (Enhancing Safety) Bill. We believe that the measures contained in the Bill will improve the safety of persons at-risk of domestic violence, and consequently contribute to a reduction in the overall burden of domestic violence that is currently borne by victims, and New Zealand society as a whole.

Although there is no single ‘best response’ to any given domestic violence situation, because the circumstances of each case may vary so widely, the Association especially welcomes the proposed introduction of Police orders. The availability of police orders provides a further option for intervention by police officers, based on their professional assessment of the risks of the situation, in order to protect the vulnerable party.
